Viator’s New Widget Builder

In March 2019, Viator announced a new widget that allows you to easily display popular tours and activities on your website. Every time someone books through these links, you generate an 8% commission.

Viator is a global tour and activity booking platform owned by TripAdvisor. With 200,000+ different experience options around the world, there are tons of well-reviewed options for your guests to select from.

Up until recently, Viator has offered several ways for affiliates to link to their site and earn revenue from bookings. In How Vacation Rental Managers Can Start Selling Tours & Activites, we outlined how to earn money with Viator through Viglink. Now, Viator has launched a new widget that lets you display tours directly on your site. Here is an example of the top 8 tours in Rome on our own VRM Insider site:

When visitors to your website click through these links and book, you earn an 8% commission! If you are hosting large groups in your homes, these big bookings can quickly add up.

How To Set Up Your Viator Widget

Step One: Sign Up For The Viator Affiliate Program

Signing up for the Viator Affiliate Program is easy. On Viator’s Distribution Partner Page, fill out the Viator Affiliate Application and a Viator representative will help set up your account. Once your account is created, you will have access to both the widget and traditional affiliate links.

Step Two: Customize Your Widget

Viator Widget

Once you receive your Viator Affiliate number, you can start using the widget builder. You can either display the top tours from a destination or individual tours you pick. There is no limit to the number of widgets, so you can create one for every destination you serve.

Step Three: Add HTML Code To Your Site

After deciding which tours to feature, the widget generates custom HTML for your site. Depending on how your site is made, there are different ways to paste custom HTML into your pages. Most Content Management Systems, like WordPress or Squarespace, have a custom HTML block that you can use. If you built your vacation rental site with tools like Lodgify, Guesty, or Streamline, reach out to figure out how to add custom HTML.

How To Start Generating Bookings

Even though you add the Viator widget to your site, it does not mean you going to start generating bookings right away. Here are a few ways to start boosting your earnings.

Create Destination Pages On Your Website

Creating specific destination pages on your website is a great way to feature your favorite tours, events, and restaurants. Check out Domio to see great examples of specific city pages. These pages are a great way to feature the Viator Widget in a logical place where you can provide information for future and current guests. In addition, you will get an SEO boost by having these specific destination pages.

Link to Your Favorite Tours In Pre-Arrival Communications

Many travelers are going to book tours prior to arrival, so make sure to send Viator links early on. You can either direct them to the widget on your site or link them directly to Viator using traditional affiliate links. In addition, if you offer a concierge service, you can link to specific tours based on guests requests or even book on their behalf using Viator’s Travel Agent Program.

Send Guests Recommended Tours & Activities Upon Arrival

Not every guest is a planner, so make sure you have a strategy to send them Viator links soon after they arrive. One issue vacation rental managers have is they don’t have emails from most guests. StayFi is a service that enables you to launch branded WiFi splash pages in all your homes to collect every guest’s contact information. With these splash pages, you can collect every guest’s email and then use marketing automation to trigger an email with your Viator Widget or traditional Viator Affiliate Links. Every major email service provider, like Constant Contact, has the capability to trigger emails when you receive a guest’s email from StayFi.
